Abstract: As professional preparation moves into online delivery, programs must be able to monitor and evaluate both students' understanding of content and performance in the field of practice. In teacher education, this is accomplished through field supervision in schools and classrooms. Growing experience and research provides guidance in developing effective course-based instruction. However, there is less research on effective supervision of field-based teaching experiences using online and distance technologies. This paper reviews what has been learned over ten years of implementation of distance supervision using an online Teaching Journal. Additionally, the paper introduces a framework for designing and evaluating online supervision of preservice teachers. Key to this endeavor has been addressing technology advances, limitations, and access, and the need for teacher development of 21st century technology skills.
