Wicked Problems in Designing Open Online Learning

  • Why not your LMS?

    • We currently deliver our online courses using Blackboard - it serves its purpose of being a single portal for the learning, and is strong on one to many (lecturer to student) interactions. However, it's not terribly popular with students or staff due to it's limitations and unattractive interface. For example, Blackboard Discussions do not allow the agility of peer to peer conversations in the way that many social media sites do, with graphics; it does not work well on mobile devices (and it can be difficult to post from iPad) etc. This project is experimental, and the purpose is to "break the mold" and investigate doing things in a different way.

  • html5 removes the cross platform inconsistencies doesn't it?

    • Hi Milena - thanks for the comment! Yes, we are using html5 in general (for that reason). However, as a course development team we need to resist the temptation of developing specific interactive components, for example, games, in other languages / software, that will not run cross platform.
