Big Brother is Watching You [get better at EFL interviews and presentations]! Harnessing facial, speech and gestural recognition for education.
Abstract: Mastering English interviews and presentations in Japan is as important for junior high-school students qualifying for EIKEN, as it is for middle-aged executives seeking a new international job. It is a lifelong quest, and students require one-to-one practice. However, large class sizes throughout the Japanese education system are a deterrent to creating “communicative competence” in English [Canale 1980, OECD 2009]. Furthermore, effective communication requires skills in both verbal [VC] and non-verbal communication [NVC]. Integrating a 3D camera with our Virtual Interviewing System [VIS] helps students develop VC and NVC by harnessing facial, speech and gestural recognition.
