Abstract: This thematic research review is aimed at synthesizing the knowledge we already have regarding the effective design principles for and implementation of computer-based simulation games in healthcare education. In particular, the aim of this study is to explore how to create an effective computer-based simulation game for learning critical communication in the field of healthcare and to provide suggestions for its effective and meaningful use. The study reviewed 31 quantitative and qualitative studies in which design principles or underlying theories or pedagogical methods were explained and examined. This review presents six design principles, along with guidelines for the learning environment’s effective use. Finally, some ideas for future research are provided.
