Abstract: Instructor presence has been a debating issue in online discussion. Research has produced contradictory results. Some research calls for high instructor presence to increase student motivation in online discussion. Other studies consider high instructor presence detrimental to student learning through online discussion. This study is designed to investigate student perceptions on instructor presence in online discussion. Participants of the study are undergraduate students in an urban university in the United States. Data is collected through student reflection, instructor’s field notes and student postings. This presentation will report research findings as well as recommendations for instructors in how to keep a balance in projecting instructor presence and promoting student voice.
