Abstract: In this presentation, we will demonstrate ARTé: Formal Analysis, an educational game that aims to facilitate college students in learning to write a formal analysis of art, applying basic knowledge about the formal elements of line, perspective, scale, color, value, light and composition to describe and analyze the formal structure and meaning of an artwork. This game is currently in development at Texas A&M University. We will describe our design process and plans for the implementation of the game in art classes as either a core or supplementary material. Testing of the game will be conducted with undergraduate students enrolled in art classes (e.g., figure drawing, digital painting, art history). Evaluation and iteration of the game design will be based on the quality of students’ formal analysis in terms of the specified criteria.
