Abstract: Online learning presents challenges for interactive learning. One way to meet those challenges is with video and audio over IP in synchronous online environments. However, this solution has issues of cost, learning curves, teacher adoption and student satisfaction. A pilot project with partnering schools provides strategies to overcome these issues and to offer college-level Japanese courses online to high school students. The model developed from the pilot project is now being applied to expand access to college-level courses to K-12 schools, import and export K-12 courses and to offer advanced certification and graduate level courses to K-12 teachers.
