Exchanging photos and culture: Report on an online course in digital photography for Jamaican teachers
Abstract: We created and offered an online course in digital photography for teachers in Jamaica and the U.S. as part of a face to face course -- Research on Online Teaching and Learning. Students in the face to face course helped design and moderate the online course as a way to learn about and study a real online community from the ground up. Our work had multiple goals -- learn about online teaching and learning through a hands-on experience, test our ideas about curriculum design and online teaching/learning tools, and learn more about issues which arise in a cross-cultural online classroom. We describe and analyze the planning, delivery, and redesign of our online course, drawing on our own reflections as well as data from the course itself (assignments, participation logs, threaded discussions, interviews and surveys with participants) to provide a multidimensional view of this learning experience.
