Workshop ID: 20625

    McDaniel College

Abstract: This workshop will focus on using Windows Movie Maker to encourage students and teachers to reflect using technology. Samples will be shown from teachers and students in inner city Baltimore and Westminster, Maryland. The basics of inserting video, pictures and music will be shared, and participants will have an opportunity to consider the ways that electronic reflections can prove quite motivating for the NetGeneration. In addition, various evaluative options will be shared.

Objectives

Participants will be able to reflect on their own reasons for attending the conference and they will be able to share what they wrote. In addition, they will be able to define reflection and identify the various forms reflection may take. Technology will be proven as a motivating factor through the sharing of research and partipant experiences. The group will compare electronic reflections vs. traditional reflections and talk about the needs of the NetGeneration to be "plugged in" at all times. They will then be able to list the basic steps involved in creating a movie, including the insertion of video, music and photos. Finally, partipants will review evaluation options (rubrics, checklists, conferencing, self-evaluations).

Topical Outline

The workshop will begin with a brief writing activity (5-10 minutes), asking participants to reflect on their purpose for being at the conference. From there I will ask for volunteers to share what they think "reflection" means and how they reflect about their profession. Hopefully volunteers might also be willing to share what they wrote. At this point, research will be shared about reflection and what we, as educators, can do to promote more Critical Reflection. In addition, various standards such as the INTASC Standards will be discussed to show the importance of reflection among our new teachers in particular. More research will be shared about how technology serves as a motivating factor for today's students. Sample videos from Baltimore teachers and students will be shown. The workshop will then move into the "How To" of Windows Movie Maker. A tutorial on the Movie Maker program will be given, and participants will have a chance to ask questions. Because assessment is constantly in the face of educators, various evaluation ideas will be shared.

Prerequisites

Participants, regardless of the level, should be teachers. All teachers (K- higher education) will find value in attending. The National Standards relating to new teachers might appeal even more so to teacher educators. No previous knowledge of Windows Movie Maker is needed, but some general background in computer usage would benefit the participant.
