Creating Digital Media for a University - Museum Partnership
Abstract: When schools of education collaborate with community partners, it creates opportunities for students to apply theories learned inside the classroom to authentic and practical use, as well as for community partners to take advantage of the resources and expertise of the university. Any new relationship requires a certain amount of negotiation and adjustment to address the needs of each stakeholder, particularly when the community partner is in a transitional phase. The results, however, are worth the time invested in laying the groundwork for a sustained partnership. This paper explores the initial phases of the Fairfield University collaboration with the Fairfield Historical Society, begun within the context of a graduate course on integrating technology in social studies and language arts. During the course, graduate students learned to utilize several technologies including podcasting, GIS, GPS, digital storytelling, Web Inquiry Projects and virtual field trips.
