One-to-One Laptop Program Evaluation in a Rural School District
Abstract: Research has shown that one-to-one laptop initiatives, which are more feasible due to decreasing costs, lighter weight, and wireless connectivity, offer many benefits for the classroom. The purpose of this research was to evaluate a fourth-grade laptop initiative in a rural school district in Ohio. Using statistical data collected through surveys and achievement scores, as well as qualitative data obtained from interviews and classroom observations, the research examined students’ academic achievement in reading and math, level of student engagement, and change in teaching practice as a result of the laptop initiative. Students’ reading and math scores significantly increased but in comparison with the control group, there were no significant differences. Teaching philosophy moved toward a more constructivist model and teachers became more confident in their ability to integrate technology. Qualitative analyses supported these findings and showed that students were increasingly more engaged in their learning when one-to-one laptops were present in the classroom.
