Abstract: This dynamic program explores new approaches to screen media literacy by looking at Rosebud Institute hands-on courses. Focusing on how digital filmmaking relates to the evolution of screen media, Rosebud programs teach how to use simple, accessible technology and address why the importance is growing in a screen-based world. This expanding program is explored – it successes, challenges and significance as technology ed grows. Offered to adults and young students, participants create small, relevant movies, using basic cinematic language. Relatedly, students create online ePortfolios, learning to manage and appropriately present their digital selves. Rosebud courses de-emphasize technical aspects, focusing on effective communication through the screen. Relatedly, the creation process enables deeper, more authentic, richer learning experiences in participants, giving them the tools, confidence and depth of knowledge to navigate and thrive in an increasingly media-saturated world.
