Abstract: In order to prepare for the profession, pre-service teachers should be given multiple opportunities to practice actually being teachers, and then fine-tune their practice through critical reflection. Due to logistical and time constraints in teacher education programs, it is difficult to provide pre-service teachers with authentic experiences that encompass all aspects of being a teacher. Multi- User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) may be tools that can help provide simulated experiences. This paper provides a rationale and theoretical framework to help guide the design of such experiences, and a detailed description of a series of simulated parent teacher conferences conducted with a group of pre-service teachers in a MUVE as an example.
