Abstract: This paper is based on a review of 11 refereed journal articles that focus on online learning in higher education. The studies reviewed are varied; they adopt a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods design. This review tackles three themes: (1) online learning versus blended and traditional learning; (2) online learning in general: factors that influence achievement and student satisfaction; and (3) online learning in foreign language education. The main purpose of this paper is to shed the light on the factors that determine success in online learning in higher education in general and in foreign language instruction in particular, in order to guide teachers when adopting this setting so that their online students experience higher achievement, better satisfaction, and less isolation (McInnerney & Roberts, 2004). This paper uncovers implications related to each theme and advances recommendations for future research.
