Abstract: This study examines the influence of an information rich environment on middle school students’ engagement in a historical inquiry activity. Three bodies of research inform this study: Historical thinking, digital history and new literacies. This study reveals that students require support in selecting documents from an archive, that while web searches can provide additional context for a historical source, the additional context might not be helpful, and that students have difficulty accounting for disconfirming evidence when engaging in historical inquiry in an information rich environment.
