Abstract: This paper is a report on the findings of two studies conducted at Jones International University. Students in the master’s program in the School of Education were surveyed in 2013. A follow up study with the students in the master’s program in the School of Business was done in 2014. There are many online learners, yet universities face the challenge of retaining online student. According to Gardner (1999), people possess various intelligences. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study was to determine whether applying Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence theory when designing assignments and activities for online courses would affect whether or not students remain with the university. Master level students in both the School of Education and the School of Business participated a Multiple Intelligence Inventory and survey. The results are used to guide course developers and authors when revising or developing courses.
