Abstract: The purpose of this study was to improve students’ motivation for learning in a rural area in China. Based on the local situation, we constructed an interest-driven teaching model based on the combined modifications of Keller’s ARCS model and Gagne’s Events of Instruction model. We implemented the model in schools with 48 8th grade students The pre- and post- assessments indicated that the model helped improve students’ motivation. Details and implications for design, teaching and learning are discussed in the paper to improve students’ learning interest.
