Abstract: This study examined the effects of utilizing gaming activities embedded within a learning management system (LMS) as study tools to assist education students in preparation for a specific state teacher certification exam. Comparisons of fluency performance on pre- and post-tests focusing on one of thirteen competency modules calculated by finding rate of words per minute (wpm) of terms answered correctly in ten minutes revealed an average increase from 1.96 wpm to 4.0 wpm. Responses to survey questions on effectiveness of gaming as a study tool were positive overall. Important lessons were learned while addressing hindrances to this project’s implementation that will ease expansion of this project for the remaining twelve competencies’ modules.
