Abstract: Research on professional development in the K-12 online environment has not been thoroughly developed. This study reports a design case about the INNOVATE course, a professional development course for K-12 online teachers with the aim of incorporating project-based learning (PBL) into teacher design practice using a new model, Project-based Online Learning (PBOL). Following the design case methodology, the authors report key decisions in the design of INNOVATE, problems faced by the designer, and how the problems were solved. Teachers who participated in the INNOVATE course incorporated project-based learning units into their online instruction and reported the course was effective in improving their teaching practice. This paper concludes with a discussion regarding further research to validate the INNOVATE course.
