Abstract: Video is one of the most popular instructional tools used by educators around the world. However, most pre-service and in-service educators are not trained how to develop quality instructional videos that increase access to, and improve, learning. This study looks at the design of popular “non-educational” YouTube channel videos in comparison to select educational channel videos in order to identify features of effective video design. Findings from the study are synthesized into a Video Analysis & Design framework that will assist educators in creating educational videos and YouTube channels that engage, motivate, and support learning.
