Melissa Brydon

Dr. Melissa Brydon is an Associate Professor of Special Education at Regis University in Denver, Colorado. She is the Director of Post-Secondary Teacher Licensure programs within the Division of Education.

Biography

Prior to joining the teacher education faculty at Regis, Melissa was a K-12 special education teacher, achieving National Board Teaching Standards in 2001. Her career in academia began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was the Program Coordinator for the Graduate Special Education program for seven years. She joined the faculty at Regis in 2014 to coordinate the Graduate Special Education program and presently serves as the Director of Post-Secondary Licensure Programs while also coordinating the secondary and special education licensure programs.

The focus of her scholarship has two dimensions: one within K-12 learning environments and one that focuses on student engagement in higher education. Melissa's K-12 scholarship focuses on the prevention and intervention of reading difficulties. Within higher education, she explores strategies that promote student engagement in online learning environments. Currently, Melissa is investigating the use of graphic novels to engage students and increase comprehension for struggling readers. She has published research in this area, as well as publications and presentations in the area of online student engagement.
