Using Technology to Enhance the Study of Art History
Abstract: Research on the effects of technology on students’ ability to formulate interpretation about works of art is lacking in the field of art history and technology and cognition. This paper looks at the use of a website as a research tool for gathering data on how an interactive multimedia information processing systems, used to created a simulated learning environment, aided Brazilian and American children 10-17 in constructing culturally relevant interpretations of a work of African art, Ndop statues from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Culturally relevant interpretations are those that parallel what historical documents and people of the culture would say about the work. The results show that both groups of children were able to construct culturally relevant interpretations about the Ndop statues.
