Developing a Case-based Approach for Pre-service Teachers Learning about Information Technology Integration in the Classroom

Abstract: This work-in-progress paper describes the application of case-based learning to a large enrolment, first year class of pre-service teachers. Ten cases were developed, each describing a real-life example of technology integration based on interviews with local elementary and secondary school teachers who were invited to participate in the project. Students accessed the cases through a database driven Web site that was designed to allow the collection of cases to be expanded in future years. This paper describes the design of the cases and their implementation in the learning environment. Analysis of student assignment work and discussion list transcripts is currently underway to identify the learning outcomes achieved by students and the issues raised by this instructional approach. Preliminary research findings will be presented at the conference.
