Abstract: Despite the predictions and expectations that the online education will become a “Killer App” and with the major impact on education, the first generation of online education has led to more disappointments than success stories. The current – one-size-fits-all static approach is extremely ineffective and leads to an increased effort from instructors teaching online courses. To improve the current state-of-art and to increase effectiveness of the online education, the focus is now towards systems that can adapt the content to match the learning preference of the individual learners, termed as the adaptive learning systems. Systems that will support adaptive learning in the University and College environment will essentially enable a much desirable paradigm shift for instructors to become the “guide-on-the-side” from the traditional “sage-on-the-stage.” This research paper addresses the issues that need careful consideration for the successful and smooth transition to the adaptive learning systems for universities and colleges.
