Developing an ethical paradigm in multimedia
Abstract: Multimedia increasingly serves the needs of the state and individuals at the expense of more social and ethical purposes. This process, involving the foregrounding of instrumental aims, has coalesced into a paradigm. An alternative paradigm is proposed using a theoretical ethical “lens” through which the operations of multimedia may be better understood. The three components of the lens described in this paper involve the recognition of inbuilt biases of multimedia tools and pedagogies, the role of teachers in recognising students’ emotional states, and the implementation of a perspective that reflects on unintended consequences of multimedia implementation. The processes described focus attention on the effects of multimedia on the society in which we live and the ethical consequences of multimedia pedagogies.
