Abstract: The Regional Education Master’s Online Training in Evaluation (REMOTE) project is a graduate degree program for educators in the U.S affiliated Pacific. Students are located in the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands and the Republic of Palau. The REMOTE program addresses the critical need to build educational evaluation capacity in the Pacific region, without requiring educators to leave their islands to get advanced training. In this presentation, we describe the lessons we have learned as we have implemented this two-year program. The challenges have included issues of reaching rural populations, supporting adult learners, and working within the unique sociocultural contexts of the Pacific. We will discuss the implications for multi-year graduate level programs and address some promising practices including the use synchronous technologies to support students and create a sense of community.
