Abstract: In a survey of higher education faculty who have taught both online and in a classroom, respondents reported less enthusiasm for and satisfaction in teaching online compared to teaching in classroom(s). Thirty three percent (n=81) report being “very satisfied” teaching online whereas 62% reported being very satisfied in classroom teaching. This study investigates the methods faculty use in teaching, the ability to have “productive conversations,” the impact of technology on satisfaction in teaching, and other items that describe time online and which contribute to finding explanations for the discrepancy in satisfaction.
