CinkNote: A Tool for Annotation-based discussion by Sharing Hand-written Annotations using Tablet PC
Abstract: Annotations are an important part in multimedia information systems as an instrument for collaborative knowledge building. Recent research on annotation interfaces provides provocative evidence that annotation-based discussion environments may lead to better conversations about a text. Unfortunately, during annotation and note-taking task input by keyboard is labor intensive and imposes a high cognitive load, especially for non-alphabetical languages such as Chinese and Japanese. This study describes the development and evaluation of an annotation-based discussion system called CinkNote, which is aimed at facilitating argumentative discussion by sharing hand-written annotations. We report how the system impacts face-to-face group discussion and how students interacted with sharing hand-written annotations.
