Abstract: This paper reports on the design and usability testing of a bilingual Diabetes Interactive Telenovela (DIT) to promote diabetes self-management in Hispanic primary care patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Content for development of the DIT storyline were informed by data obtained from six focus groups conducted with 72 primary care patients from three local community health clinics. Discount usability testing of a prototype version of the DIT was conducted with 19 volunteers from the same community clinics to determine ease of navigation, and acceptability of the program. Usability results revealed a high level of user satisfaction with the DIT. Preliminary data suggests that the DIT is a suitable strategy to convey diabetes management information to Hispanic men and women with T2DM. Pilot testing a beta version of the DIT in the local community health clinics is likely to further aid in its refinement.
