Abstract: Early adopters of online instruction were encouraged to “adjust” the activities and assignments from their face to face courses to the online environment; however, not all adjustments were effective. The author teaches a master’s level research methods course online and found certain aspects difficult to handle as effectively or efficiently as could be done in a face to face class. As a result, elements of the course were not as effective as the instructor wanted them to be. One such area was the development of research questions by the students. Several methods were tried and were found to: cause continued discomfort for the students; increase the faculty member’s hours of work; or be ineffective for clarifying student understanding. This paper discusses the journey from the asynchronous online environment to the use of synchronous activities to increase the effectiveness of the learning environment.
