eCLASS: System to Support Alternative In-class Learning
Abstract: This paper describes eClass, an e-Learning system that can be used to support both after-class learning and alternative in-class learning. The system relied on intelligent video and image processing techniques to post-process and made available in-class lecture videos. The original lengthy lecture video was automatically divided up into shorter meaningful learning units, which are more suitable for unsupervised e-learning activities. Additional learning tools were integrated into the eClass browser to support full e-learning experience. The system was put to use in a college course where course repeaters and students with low motivational beliefs registered and learned using eClass. Experimental results show that students learning with eClass performed better in terms of learning achievement (i.e. the final grade) and achieved higher motivational beliefs.
