Transforming a Medical School Through Active Learning Principles
Abstract: Transformation of a medical school from a primarily lecture based curriculum to a learner centered, active learning model requires multi-dimensional institutional change and planning. This case study describes the steps and results of facility planning, curriculum redesign and faculty development across a seven-year period. Active learning facility design strategies are described, along with matching curricular design approaches that result in an integrated, multi-disciplinary active learning based curriculum. The challenges of organizational change and the related faculty development are discussed.
