Abstract: The IRS (Interactive Response System) has been widely used to promote student learning since 2003. However, there is limited research examining the quality of the IRS questions developed by teachers and the challenges they may encounter when designing questions. The purpose of this study is to address this research gap through examining a high school teacher’s IRS implementation. The data sources consisted of tests, interviews, email correspondences, and journals. The preliminary findings reveal that the teacher mainly used questions available in the textbook and some test banks to make up the IRS questions. Although there were several constraints to designing the IRS questions, the major challenge appears to be associated with composing quality question content. To develop high-quality IRS-assisted instruction, collaboration between university scientists and school teachers is suggested.
