Considerations for Optimizing Online Courses with Web 2.0 Tools
Abstract: The complexity of distance learning classes has continued to exceed previous formats such as paper-based correspondence courses and asynchronous discussion boards. Today students can learn through authentic learning environments that offer interactivity. One way to increase interactivity in distance learning classes is to use Web 2.0 tools. These tools are effective because students often use them for entertainment and work. As such, this paper is designed to discuss how distance educators can progress beyond course management systems such as Blackboard to engage students in interactive learning experiences by using Web 2.0 tools. An examination of how a course was transformed from a class exclusively delivered in Blackboard to a blended format supplemented by multiple Web 2.0 tools is presented. The benefit and challenges of using Web 2.0 tools for distance-learning purposes are also reviewed.
