Abstract: This workshop will focus on the tools and techniques found useful after completion of a two year iPad implementation program at the Franklin Academy High School. Students and instructors have found many benefits to using the latest technology associated with the iPad in their teaching and learning. Instructors must employ new strategies and techniques when planning, implementing and assessing their lessons. The iPad, along with a selection of apps and supporting hardware can make this an efficient and seamless experience. Students discover new ways to organize, communicate and collaborate in and outside of the traditional classroom setting. Through experiencing sample lesson plans, student work samples, and other activities, the participants will come away with a better understanding of the role of the iPad in the classroom and have a rich supply of tools and techniques to venture out on their own with confidence.

Objectives

Participants will review the experiences from the two-year implementation iPad program at the Franklin Academy. This will provide a map for those seeking to implement similar situations in their own settings. Recommendations will be made to encourage sound implementation processes and efficient use of resources. Participants will learn about the planning tools teachers can use to help prepare lessons, assessments, and methods for communicating with students and their families. Participants will experience several sample lesson plans from a variety of curricular areas that demonstrate techniques used by experienced teachers to instruct students using the iPad. The sample lessons will highlight commonly used applications by the student and teacher. Participants will review sample student work and ways in which they have utilized the tools on the iPad to organize their learning. This will include a review of the most commonly used applications for student personal productivity, calendar reminders, and study/research aides. Participants will view ways in which the iPad can facilitate communication and collaboration between the instructor and students both in and outside the classroom. Participants will be provided with other resources found to be invaluable to administrators, teachers, and students who are utilizing the iPad in the learning environment. Participants will be given an opportunity to create a quick lesson or portion of a lesson utilizing some of the tools and techniques they have experienced.
