Abstract: Video editing apparatus and websites that allow sharing of user-generated videos have currently become popular. The development of media literacy, even in higher education, is gaining importance. Students should be able to critically evaluate movies, not as professionals but as laypersons. The author focuses on his classroom practices and examines educational methods aimed at developing achieve media literacy. Focus group interviews suggest that beginners in particular would develop media literacy by learning how to operate video equipment and would thereby come to understand a moviemaker’s viewpoint through the exercise of creating and publishing videos.
