Abstract: In the context of faculty development workshops aimed at teaching basic multimedia skills – such as image, audio and video editing, as well as simple animation and web design – the software tools used by multimedia professionals are not always appropriate given their cost and complexity. Workshops that leverage software as a service (SaaS) and open source software applications, on the other hand, provide a more sustainable option for learners to continue developing their skills after the workshop. With an abundance of viable tools, the challenge becomes selecting software that balances ease of use with the capacity for creative autonomy. The session will discuss lessons learned in using both free versions of SaaS and open source software to teach faculty development workshops in multimedia, as well as sharing best practices and tools that can be applied to similar professional development scenarios within other organizations.
