Abstract: This paper aimed to design a Logo-based MCY learning environment for the polycube pattern activities included in the elementary school mathematics textbooks in Korea. We designed Web 2.0 based learning environment using JavaMAL microworld so that students can create and explore pattern objects interactively, and provided students with virtual manipulative and expressive tools to support their thought process for pattern generalization. We analyzed students’ algebraic thinking based on their symbolic pattern expressions and responses in the pre-test and post-test. The results suggested that students’ pattern reasoning became more structured and sophisticated, and the designed learning environment was very useful to ...
