Share Paper: International Students’ Perception of Media Literacy in Japan: Focusing on Cell Phones and Smartphones

Abstract: The paper is a report on the findings of a study conducted on international students (ISs)’ usage of cell phones, smartphones and computers, and their perceptions of media literacy on Internet usage. Multiple analysis techniques were employed to examine them. The results revealed that (a) ISs used cell phones mainly to make voice calls while they used smartphones to make voice calls, send text messages and access the Internet; (b) IS smartphone users perceived “information retrieval” and “information browsing” as equally important, their scores both higher than that of “information transmission.” These findings indicate that smartphones have become an essential ...
