Abstract: The internet is teeming with educational videos. Video in all its formats is increasingly being used in educational contexts. These videos are very frequently well-designed and attractive to look at but are not always based on state-of-the-art findings on how learners memorize. In addition, instructional videos do not always take motivational aspects into account. In this paper we present both a theoretical framework for instructional video design and a practical illustration of the theoretical principles on motivation and cognition in two instructional videos.
