Abstract: This article addresses the use of portable devices such as smartphones and tablets with free photo editing software to enhance foreign language instruction. Chinese is the language discussed, and in particular the difficulty Western students have mastering the use of written Chinese characters. A rationale is provided rooted in the pictographic nature of Chinese characters that also makes reference to motivational factors and social engagement as a potential result of student use of social media. The use of PhotoGrid software is discussed and a number of sample learning activities are provided.
