Cognitive Apprenticeship through Problem-Based Learning

Abstract: Problem-based learning (PBL) can foster student independence and critical thinking skills. The current study explores how PBL can further benefit from integration with the principles of a cognitive apprenticeship— using modeling, coaching, and fading to expose learners to authentic problem-solving skills and successful application of knowledge. By assuming the role of expert, a teacher can take a more active part in the problem-based learning model, providing the support necessary to create students who can solve ill-defined problems using real-world knowledge application and expert-level techniques for approaching tasks in cognitive domains.
