Abstract: The importance of sound testing of educational theories is discussed. The need for testing is illustrated by an examination of constructivism. Criticisms of constructivism and methods of empirical testing of educational programs are considered. Importance of employing alternative educational theories and practices is illustrated by the results from tablet/workbook research. The Cochrane health database is used as an example of rigorous evidence repository. The importance of pragmatic testing of teaching methods derived from different theories is illustrated by research on database learning, leading to theory development. It is suggested that an international repository of high quality educational research be developed
