Abstract: This paper is intended to provide a preliminary overview of the current situation of a course established with the purpose of bringing the reading achievements of two-year junior college English majors in their final year of studies into line with their achievements in the other three 'basic' skills of listening, speaking and writing. The short duration and relatively large class size necessitated adopting an approach that conferred large degrees of freedom and flexibility in choosing reading material to the students, while at the same time incorporating a manageable system of evaluation for such a potentially complex endeavour.
