Abstract: During this interactive roundtable session, participants will be invited to play and discuss the social impact game Get Water!, a game developed to bring awareness to the issue of water scarcity and its repercussions for girls’ access to education. More specifically, this roundtable will explore insights and reflection about the design of effective game-based learning experiences informed by two case studies that investigated adolescent and adult interpretations of this educational mobile game. We will engage participants in discussion of pedagogical issues including the identification of learning opportunities in social impact games; integration of content into gameplay and its implications for the broader learning environment; and directions for the future development of video games about social issues and supporting material tailored to the needs of social studies and media literacy educators.
