Visually empowering the spoken word in instructional multimedia
Abstract: The design of engaging multimedia-based instructional content requires a holistic approach, drawing upon pedagogical strategies, techniques for visual communication, effective scriptwriting and instructional design principles. A series of partnerships between an instructional multimedia designer and undergraduate faculty from a variety of disciplines resulted in exemplary instructional content design. This presentation shares practical examples from a body of work prepared for hybrid and online undergraduate courses. Content is “localized” for multimedia-based delivery through a thoughtful alignment of visual and audio elements and re-thinking of visual exposition. This focused and purposeful approach maximizes the affordances of the audio and video communication channels, while incorporating pedagogical strategies to encourage interaction and reflection.
