Abstract: This paper provides a report on AboutTheCity, a work-in-progress designed to assist in responding to the challenges confronting education and cities in the 21st century. AboutTheCity is described as an initiative conceptualized to leverage social media and information and communication technologies as a way of engaging in real-world environments to foster learning and urban participation. To date, AboutTheCity has been iterated as an early-stage minimally viable environment; presented as an artistic installation to provoke thought on open cities for 2025 and beyond; presented in the workshop context of information technologies and city life; and advanced as an enabler of ambient culture using the constructs of awareness, learning, openness, and engagement. Early indications of interest in the ambient culture conceptualization and AboutTheCity are promising. This paper points to opportunities for navigating the way forward and proposes an extended framework for ambient culture.
