Abstract: Employees are increasingly using technologies that can support informal learning, which can be simply, though imprecisely, characterized as learning that takes place outside a classroom or curriculum. This offers employers opportunities to better support informal learning. Technological support of informal learning can involve intranets, videoconferencing, social media tools and others. In this presentation we discuss practices to support informal learning through technology in the workplace. We also discuss some of the opportunities and challenges arising from technology in support of informal learning, including creating a learning culture, certification of informal learning, cyber loafing, and the potential release of sensitive information. We examine nascent technological approaches to the evaluation and assessment of informal workplace learning, including a learning community node of the National Research Council of Canada’s new Learning and Performance Support System platform.
