Abstract: Social network sites are growing in popularity for personal communication. These sites are also increasingly used in educational contexts. One of the reasons for this is that they are promoted as facilitating social learning conditions (Joosten 2012). As the boundaries between formal and informal learning contexts blur through the use of social media platforms (Greenhow & Lewin 2015), it is possible that their use could have an impact on the social connections that students make.
