Abstract: The purpose of this research is to investigate the efficacy of using iPad phonemic apps (Phonics Island, EduKitty ABC, and One Minute Reader) on early literacy letterbox intervention instruments during one-on-one pull out tutoring sessions between pre-service teacher candidates and at-risk/low performing early elementary student readers. The letterbox (Elkonin boxes) are used to assist at-risk early readers in isolating and pronouncing initial, medial, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Traditionally, the letterbox interventions are done hands-on with pre-service teacher generated materials not involving any technology use.
